Surrounded by some of the worlds most stunning scenery the Mckenzie country located right in the Southern Alps offers much more than just breath taking views, it is also the home of a world class trophy trout fishery.

The main season for canal fishing starts from May 1st- September 31st with July/August being some of the best months.

The hydro canals are something very unique and special in the South Island which provide anglers with the potential to catch some fish of a lifetime..! As well as large trout, the canals also offer the opportunity to catch great salmon that were released or escaped from the surrounding salmon farms. These fish are great to take home and put on the table. The canals and power stations they supply source their water from the pristine head water Lakes, being  Tekapo, Pukaki and Ohau. The salmon farms present in each section of canals provides a unique fishery whereby the trout and salmon in the canals benefit greatly from the additional food sources they feed the salmon, for this reason the size, condition and abundance of fish is unmatched by any other New Zealand freshwater sports fishery. Although the canals aren’t the best thing to look at the surrounding scenery is certainly breath taking.

Canal fishing is a fishery aimed at catching trophy trout from anywhere between 5-30lb+ and salmon when timed right, although you can target these monsters with a fly rod you will have more success in targeting them with spin gear. There are many techniques used while spin fishing be it soft baiting, egg rolling, or even casting a standard lure. Our aim is to help you take away new techniques and skills and try get a monster fish..!
